MOBO Award Winning Artists’ Bring No.1 Album’s Story to Life with Illustrated Book
Rising UK artists, Nyrobi (21) and Chaya (17) of ALT BLK ERA have transformed their chart-topping debut album ‘Rave Immortal’ into a visually stunning illustrated phsyical and digital zine, expanding on their deeply personal story that has resonated with fans and critics alike.
The Arts Council England National Lottery funded zine takes readers on an emotional journey that mirrors the themes of the No.1 UK Rock & Metal album. Through illustrations and raw storytelling, the sisters share the realities of living with long-term illness and hidden disability based on Nyrobi’s experience of becoming ill as a teenager, during the pandemic.
The album and zine, explore themes such as debilitating physical pain, lost friendships, isolation and the struggle to be seen, before evolving into an inspiring tale of growth, defiance and empowerment.
“Turning the album into a zine allowed us to bring the story to life in a whole new way,” states Chaya.
“It’s a visual and emotional extension of the music, a way to connect even more deeply with people who have experienced similar struggles.” adds Nyrobi.
The sisters will be opening up an online forum for discussions when they launch a Zine Club in May to meet and discuss themes from their story that are impactful on others.
This project has further cemented the duo's status as boundary-pushing artists, leading to their recent selection by BBC Introducing and the PRS Foundation to represent the UK at the British Music Embassy in SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas and a Heavy Music Award nomination for the second year running.
The MOBO Award-winning artist continues to challenge industry norms, proving that disability representation in music and literature is both necessary and powerful.
